Module Aims

  • Enable the student to analyse contemporary professional, legal and ethical issues in dementia practice.
  • Enable the student to develop and extend knowledge and skills base around relevant professional, legal and ethical issues in the care and support of a person affected by dementia and their carers.

Content Summary

Professional, legal and ethical concepts and principles.

Legislation to include (but not limited to) Human Rights Act (1998) Mental Health Act (1983 as amended 2007) Mental Capacity Act (Amendment) Act (2019) Mental Health (Wales) Measure (2010) Equality Act (2010) Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act (2014).

Relevant case law.

Professional codes of conduct to include accountability, raising concerns, risk, duty of candour, standards of care, and advanced plans of care.

Autonomy, rights, advocacy, empowerment, equality and inclusion, disability, relationship centred support, reablement, supporting choice and decision-making, mental capacity, informed consent, liberty protection.

Principles of vulnerability and safeguarding.

This module will enhance critical thinking and decision making skills in relation to applying professional, legal, and ethical theory to dementia care and practice.
