Module Aims

Provide opportunity for students to undertake work experience, performing selected tasks and project work relevant to the specialism of the employer. Enable students to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate for a professional work environment.

Content Summary

On this module, students will undertake a period of supervised work experience, in order to gain industry experience and to develop professionalism. In doing so, students will learn to work with the wider design team, other industry professionals and/or clients.

The work experience will take place under the direction of an Employer with support from a nominated supervisor from the appropriate award. This module will facilitate the development of Personal Development Planning through the delivery of the graduate attributes identified below in the module descriptor.

The Academic Mentor Responsibilities will be to vet possible placements to ensure that the work offered is of an appropriate level and content and the company complies with the relevant legislation HASAWA 1974. (The company will be required to complete the University's Health and Safety Checklist prior to the placement commencing); to agree a programme of training/work with the employer-based supervisor and student; to brief the student on their responsibilities before the placement commences; and to use visits (at least two) to maintain the necessary training objectives.

The Employer Responsibilities will be to supply a suitably qualified supervisor for the student; to provide induction training; to
provide instruction in Health and Safety aspects of the work; to advise the student on any confidential aspects of the work within operational constraints; to

seek to provide the student (by discussion with the academic mentor and student) a clearly defined training/work programme; and to maintain a balance between the needs of the organisation and the training needs of the student.
