Module Aims

To provide an appreciation of operational processes, techniques, planning and control systems with reference to both manufacturing and service industries from a qualitative and quantitative perspective.
To critically explore and examine project management in a business and supply chain context

The position of operations in an organisation. The input-transformation-output model.
The relationship between corporate strategy and operations management
The concept of strategic drift and its impact upon OM
Types of operations - producers of goods and producers of services.
The strategic role of operations in the organisation. The meaning of the operations function.
Performance objectives in OM.
The importance of design product development in SOM
Determining the 'Operational Positioning Strategy'
Method study and work measurement, ergonomics. Scientific OM Materials handling - broad costs, equipment, principle of unit load.
The role of key stakeholders in a project
Identifying key stakeholder groups
Strategies for the management of stakeholder perceptions & expectations
Structural & leadership issues that will be
faced in managing a project and a project team
A high-level appreciation of OR research methods to allow students to identify and understand some of the prominent analytical methods in operations and supply field. This will include an awareness of optimisation models (travelling salesman, etc) and game theory.
