Module Aims

To enable the student to explore the concepts of health and factors which influence health and wellbeing across the lifespan.

Content Summary

The content of this module will be applied across all four fields of practice. The module will explore the following themes:

Holistic health and wellbeing across the lifespan covering all 4 fields of practice (Adult, Mental, Child and Learning Disability Fields).

Defining the role of the family and/or community in health promotion and illness prevention.

The dynamic nature of health linking with self and family ownership of health and individual experience, health literacy, values, attitudes and beliefs.

Defining, Identifying and measuring health needs, wellbeing and ill-health. Epidemiology, genomics and demography.

Identify factors affecting health and wellbeing across the lifespan, the determinants of health and inequalities encompassing community profiles.

Examination of definitions and models of health promotion in the context of prevention and protection, specifically motivation and empowerment across the age continuum.

Current legislation and implications for public health and health promotion; prioritising, implementing and evaluating health promotion interventions. To include genomics, reasonable adjustments and strength-based approaches.

The role of the nurse in prevention, promotion and protection ‘Making Every Contact Count’. Linking with other professionals (MDT and Voluntary) to meet the health needs of individual clients and groups.

Identifying vulnerability and issues of safeguarding and protection in the context health promotion and prevention across fields of nursing.

Impact of adverse childhood experiences.

Global patterns of health and wellbeing outcomes.

Community profiling will be completed as a formative assessment

Interprofessional Education (IPE) will form part of the students clinical and theoretical work.

Other topics such as compassionate leadership will be addressed eg.
