Module Aims

To provide healthcare professionals with the skills, knowledge and methodical approach to prepare and plan a successful and safe expedition in a variety of settings.

Content Summary

Appropriate screening of expedition attendees is essential to both ensure fitness to undertake the expedition and also to consider their needs during the expedition. Preparation planning should include consideration of the politico-economic situation together with familiarisation of the local environment with respect to travel, communication, clothing, equipment, local logistics and ethical considerations. Preparation will cover both physical and mental attributes and ensure that expedition member roles and responsibilities are understood in advance. Evacuation planning should cover both the practical elements and the appropriate insurance to facilitate this and other considerations.

Topics will typically include:

• Pre-expedition screening and medical assessment
• Preparation for expedition
• Physical and mental preparation for expedition
