Module Aims
To undertake a period of supervised work experience under the direction of an employer with support from a nominated supervisor from the appropriate award.
Content Summary
This module offers students the opportunity to undertake a sustained period of supervised work experience, under the guidance of an academic mentor. Through this process, the module will facilitate the development of Personal Development Planning through the delivery of the key skills (identified in the module descriptor).
The academic mentor holds responsibility for vetting potential placements, to ensure that the work offered is of an appropriate level and content, and that the company complies with the HASAWA 1974. Additionally, the company will be required to complete the University's Health and Safety The academic mentor will also complete a checklist prior to the placement commencing. At least two visits will be conducted by the academic mentor, to ensure that the necessary training objectives are completed.
Students will be briefed on their responsibilities before commencement of the placement. The mentor will ensure that a programme of training/work will be agreed with the employer-based supervisor and student.
The employer will be responsible:
• To supply a suitably-qualified supervisor for the student, to provide induction training.
• To provide instruction in Health and Safety aspects of the work.
• To advise the student on any confidential aspects of the work within operational constraints.
• To seek to provide the student (by discussion with the academic mentor and student) a clearly defined training/work programme.
• To maintain a balance between the needs of the organisation and the training needs of the student.
