Module Aims

  • To enable the students to critically appraise factors influencing nurse prescribing utilising the nurse prescribing formulary for community practitioners.
  • To facilitate the development of knowledge and skills to become competent community nurse prescribers in accordance with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (2021) Competency Framework.
  • To enable the student to critically examine the impact of contemporary developments on Specialist Community Public Health nursing practice.

Content Summary

This module seeks to address two elements, nurse prescribing and contemporary issues within health visiting.
The content relating to community nurse prescribing will address the requirements necessary to achieve community nurse or midwife prescriber status and will explore:
Applying professionalism in prescribing, meeting the needs of different patients / carers, ensuring confidentiality, informed consent, ensuring dignity and respect, acting within limitations of competence and within the NMC (2018) Code .
Critical reflection to enhance prescribing practice and ensuring safe prescribing practice, working as part of a team.
Undertaking a comprehensive nursing assessment and effective interpretation of data to inform safe prescribing.
Considering prescribing or non-prescribing options working in partnership with patents / carers, providing accurate, understandable and accessible information to patients/carers relating to their medicines and treatments...
Developing critical knowledge relating to pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.
Applying relevant local and national frameworks to prescribing practice – pathways, policies, local formularies, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) guidelines.
Accurate prescription generation and record keeping.
Calculating medication dosages.
Monitoring and reviewing patients’ treatments.
The Nurse Prescribing element of this module has been developed in line with the following:
Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018) Standards for prescribing programmes and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (2021) A Competency Framework for all Prescribers.

The content relating to contemporary issues and development in health, and social care which will have a direct impact on the practice environment of specialist community public health nursing – Health Visiting, will explore:
The physical, financial and psycho-social effects of social issues on the population.
The impact of mental health issues, substance misuse, anti-social behaviour and its effects.
Identification and engagement with individuals and families, developing effective interpersonal relationships.
Approaches to working with difficult to engage individuals.
Professional practice and accountability within health visiting.
Policies relating to health and social care and health visiting practice.
Information giving and gaining consent.
Immunisations.
Multi-agency working, participation and collaboration.
Evaluation of service delivery.
