Module Aims
To enable the student to develop a critical approach in practice to inform decision making based on the application of professional, legal, ethical frameworks
Content Summary
The content of this module will be applied across all fields of practice. The module will explore the following themes:
The Code (2018) and concepts of professionalism
Professional accountability the professional, legal and ethical duty of care. The duty of candour
Confidentiality, record keeping and reporting. Raising concerns and whistle blowing. Complaint processes, conflict resolution, processes of communication
Human Rights – conceptual & legislative dimensions, upholding the rights of people across the age continuum
The Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, deprivation of liberty/liberty protection standards and the implications for person centred care
The life/death debate across the lifespan,
Organ and tissue donation protocols
Advanced expressions of choice and consent, advanced directives, lasting power of attorney
Frameworks for legal and ethical decision-making across all fields of practice
Autonomy, choice, consent & capacity
Duty of Care, standard of care and legal definition of care
Safeguarding and vulnerability, deprivation of liberty and legislative frameworks relating to field of practice
Recognising and preventing discrimination, promoting diversity and equality
The political/socioeconomic factors driving health and social care policy and legislation at global, national, and local levels.
Principles of health politics and economics and their relevance to resource allocation in health and social care settings
