Module Aims

1. To introduce students to visual language for design.
2. To introduce students to design thinking and problem-solving tools.
3. To develop an understanding of the design process from interpreting a brief, ideation, experimentation and solution generation.

Content Summary

This module introduces students to design and visual communication as a tool for solving problems within a fashion context. As designers, students need to understand the relationship between problem solving and creativity, and the tension between creative expression and a resolved design solution.

This module is therefore intended to introduce students to the design process. Students will explore research gathering and analysis techniques, be introduced to a variety of approaches for generating design ideas, learn how to develop designs quickly, to visually communicate ideas, and to evaluate them against a variety of criteria. This understanding of the design process and design thinking will be fundamental too their experience on the remainder of the program.
