Module Aims

There has been a great growth in the provision of strength and conditioning in special populations. Working in these fields requires specialist knowledge. This module will enable the student to acquire and display the knowledge, know-how, skill and competence to become a specialist in delivering varied programmes of strength and conditioning to a variety of populations.

Content Summary

Working with special populations provides unique challenges to the strength and conditioning coach. This requires an understanding of the key constraints to performance for each group, along with the need to be able to modify traditional training approaches to enable effective delivery to the particular client group.

The module examines the key constraints to performance of a range of special populations including adolescent athletes, the elderly, Paralympic athletes and special Olympic athletes. Students will then evaluate several training options for this group and carry out work with one chosen group within the field.
