Module Aims
The aim of the module is to support students in their journey towards being an independent and lifelong learner. The module will focus on developing students’ critical thinking, research, analysis, evaluation and writing skills within the context of a programme of study and their personal, pedagogical progression.
This module provides opportunities for students to advance their personal and academic study skills and to introduce them to the concept and value of researching in order to prepare them for continuing undergraduate study.

Content Summary: This module is designed to introduce individuals to academic and research skills required at level 4 to underpin their further studies and will include the following areas:
• The role of study skills in academic development.
• Understanding individual learning styles and to utilise a range of learning methods.
• Preparing to study-time management and the online study environment.
• Academic writing skills.
• Referencing and plagiarism and use of TURNITIN.
• Critical writing, thinking and analysis.
• Assessment formats- Essays, reports, portfolio’s presentations, exams and online assessment tools.
• The assessment process- understanding and interpreting assessment criteria and directing responses accordingly.
• Effective strategies for planning, structuring and presenting assignments.
• The assessment process- submission and feedback.
• An introduction to research techniques and conventions.
• Effective use of the library resources
• Strategies for effective reading and note taking.
• Digital Competency- tools to enhance research skills.
