To facilitate the development of skills to counsel asynchronously and synchronously online.

To demonstrate understanding of how theory, evidence and ethical frameworks inform safe and effective asynchronous and synchronous online counselling.

Skills

Skills practice for telephone and online counselling including, e.g. building and maintaining the therapeutic relationship online, online asynchronous and synchronous communication, anonymity and disinhibition, ending the therapeutic relationship. Use of online platforms & tools.

Professional Practice:

Professional Practice issues e.g. contracting and safeguarding.

Confidentiality and the legal and ethical context.

Understanding how IT supports online counselling.

NB All teaching and learning is carried out online in this module using UniLearn. ‘Seminars’ are delivered using threads on the Discussion facility and Groups and Blogs used for skills practice.

*In order to meet the Professional Practice criteria for the course it is a requirement that you attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all timetabled lectures, meetings and other learning activities arranged as part of this module.
