Module Aims
Enable students to develop a critical understanding of the key ideas and principles of the humanistic approach in integrative psychotherapy theory, research and practice.
Develop students awareness of ethical and legal issues in relation to professional counselling practice, including introducing the professional role of counsellor.
To develop core competencies and skills in counselling.
Develop students critical awareness of context in relation to socio/political/cultural narratives that influence clients and the counselling process
Content Summary
Introduction to integration and working relationally in counselling psychology.
Introducing humanistic theory, research and practice.
Counselling skills, e.g. building and repairing a therapeutic alliance, immediacy, phenomenological
enquiry, goal setting and endings.
Principles of practice, i.e. contracting, note taking, confidentiality, and supervision, with reference to the ethical and practice guidelines (HCPC & BPS).
Self-awareness of the dimensions of diversity in identity, e.g. racial, cultural, socio-economic, religious, gender, sexuality, physical or psychological disability for self and practice.
The development of key core counselling skills, including contracting, rapport building, empathic responding, session structuring.
The introduction of foundation counselling skills, including, empathy, immediacy, phenomenological enquiry, goal setting and endings.
This module includes mandatory formative assessment activities, to support students learning and development prior to summative assessment tasks.
