Module Aims

To support students to develop a critical understanding and application of the philosophy, theory and empirical underpinnings of CBP practice.

To develop a critical understanding of the importance of the therapeutic relationship and develop competence in how it relates to the effective implementation of technical interventions.

To develop core competencies and skills in evidenced based CBP practice.

To facilitate the development of competent and critically aware practitioners, who can reflect on their practice and use supervision appropriately.

Content Summary

The scientific method and its significance for CBP and core cognitive and behavioural interventions in CBP

Third wave CBP including mindfulness, ACT and compassionate focused therapy.

The evidence base and efficacy of cognitive behavioural approaches to common mental health problems.

The positioning of the therapeutic relationship in CBP and the evidence base for its importance.

Assessment, approaches to case conceptualisation and treatment planning and the use of tools and
techniques to monitor, review and assess practice outcomes, ending therapy and relapse prevention planning.

Developing problem specific formulations, tailoring case conceptualisations and evidence-based treatment approaches and protocols for such presentations.

Developing CBP practical skills, e.g. eliciting and containing of emotions, cognitive restructuring and the use of behavioural experiments.

Evidenced-based approaches to assessing and managing risk.

The role of supervision in CBP clinical practice.

Self-reflection and personal development– identifying triggers for emotional shifts, capturing and reality testing cognitions and identifying unhelpful behaviours and maintenance cycles.

The main dimensions of diversity in identity, e.g. racial, cultural, socio-economic, religious, gender, sexuality, physical or psychological disability.

Practice issues with reference to the ethical and practice guidelines (HCPC & BPS).

This module includes mandatory formative assessment activities, to support students learning and development prior to summative assessment tasks.
