Module Aims

To offer opportunities for students to work as actors, assistant directors or other agreed roles within a demanding, \\\"professionalising\\\" production regime.
To develop performance or directing skills and apply these in a festival context.
To highlight the centrality of dramaturgy and dramaturgical research in theatremaking.

Content Summary

Based around a staff directed theatre festival consisting of one-act style plays, the module is designed to ‘brush up against theatre industry production practices’. It also emphasises theatre historical and contextual research in support of production. In this regard, students will carry out an assessed presentation. With respect to the festival, students will be cast in a production under the supervision of a director or be established as assistant director under the director’s guidance. Alternatively/additionally, they may negotiate another suitable role within the festival event (for example, stage manager, deputy production manager, assistant costume/sound designer or dramaturg). Students will also contribute a street/visual performance to the Faculty’s cross course Immersed Festival. Normally, the emphasis will be on acting and/or directing process, on good rehearsal practice including quality of preparation for rehearsal (e.g. physical and intellectual preparation) and the meeting of professional standards as regards co-operation, ensemble contribution, work ethic and concentration of effort. It is these attributes rather than overall production values which will be the focus of teaching, learning and assessment on this module. Attendance at all classes including rehearsals is expected, and students will gain critical understanding of the performance text and content as well as develop an awareness of others in collaboration, partnership and contribution to ensemble playing. Students are assessed through their performances and/or other creative input throughout the process.
