Module Aims

To support students to develop the skills and knowledge required in placement; evidencing the relevant national occupational standards.

To build knowledge and understanding of collaborative skills and practices in an Early Years context.

To identify and evaluate a range of techniques and tools for developing reflective practice.

To support the use of Welsh language and interpret how Welsh culture is promoted through curricula strategies in the early years.

Examine what constitutes good mental health in children and the factors that are important in maintaining this from a child development perspective.

To explore a range of factors that can impact on children’s learning.

Content Summary

Understand and extend the skills required for professional practice, including the importance and implementation of health, safety and risk management in early years settings

Make thorough connections between theories learned in level 5 modules and practice.

Engage in a range of module tasks that demonstrate self-evaluation and reflective techniques; developing a professional development plan

Definitions, prevalence and possible causations of common mental health difficulties occurring in childhood

Develop understanding of strategies for promoting good mental health and well-being in children in the early years.

Extend the use of Welsh language skills and an understanding of Welsh culture as can be applied in professional practice.

Extend the development of academic skills that can support the learners to fully engage in their studies effectively, e.g. reflective techniques, preparation for research methods and self-evaluation.

Students will need to pass (minimum of 40%) the ‘portfolio’ assessment in order to pass this module. In addition, the module must be passed successfully before progressing to the next level or completing the award. Successful completion will need to be supported and evidenced by a satisfactory Placement Monitoring Report where there are no significant ‘causes for concern’ identified in respect of the above learning outcomes including those documented in the Placement Handbook.
