Module Aims

To critically evaluate challenges facing the health service in Wales, approaches to innovation and both case studies in previous innovation – both successful and unsuccessful.
To enable the student to initiate and manage change in the interest of patients/clients.

Content Summary

This module will challenge students to become effective innovators by equipping them with the skills to identify solutions, sell those solutions to others and implement them. The module will explore case studies from previous step-change scenarios and examples of current and near-future innovations in health.
Students will critically evaluate the differences between successful and failed innovations. Course Content will include:
• Service improvement and service design
• Concepts of performance, performance measurement and evaluation, including inspection
• Innovation and re-shaping health services
• Challenges to innovation in health services
• The Innovation Cycle
• The use of technology to adapt and change services
• The use of procurement to drive change in the Health Service supply chain
• The role of leadership in innovation
• Cases studies in innovation
