Module Aims

In the context of people management and communication skills, this module introduces the practice of coaching and mentoring. The focus is upon the theoretical frameworks which underpin coaching and mentoring practice, and the module provides an opportunity for the practical application of these theoretical skills.

The module aims are:

• To facilitate the understanding of the skills, principles and practice of effective business coaching and mentoring
• To allow students to review their own ability as a business coach or mentor
• To give students experience of undertaking business coaching or mentoring in the workplace

Content Summary

Understanding skills, principles and practice of effective business coaching and mentoring. Definitions of coaching & mentoring; differentiating between mentoring, coaching, counselling & therapy; exploring approaches to and the process of coaching and mentoring.

Reviewing own ability as a business coach or mentor
Personal reflection and review of skills, abilities, knowledge of an effective coach and mentor; models of reflective practice (e.g. Kolb, critical incidents, arcs of attention); Self-assessment tools and techniques; Coaching and mentoring codes of conduct (e.g. Association for Coaching, EMCC, etc.).

Undertaking business coaching or mentoring in the workplace
Techniques for goal identification; Learning and development outcomes – behavioural, cognitive and emotional; Characteristics of effective coaching and mentoring plans; Coaching and mentoring tools and techniques; Models of coaching and mentoring; Recording and monitoring coaching or mentoring activities; Strategies for coaching or mentoring; Use and completion of personal reflection log.

LO2 Evidence the ability to : be able to plan and prepare for business coaching or mentoring programmes based on identified developmental needs and goals; be able to assess own skills, behaviours and knowledge as a coach and mentor and demonstrate 3 hours of mentoring practice.
LO3 Evidence how: you have developed and how you plan to develop in the future as a coach or mentor; and be able to reflect and review own business coaching or mentoring practice
