Document Version Information

Version 1
Valid From 01 Sep 2021
Valid To 31 Aug 2027

Module Aims

1. Examine various intellectual contexts in which documentary practice takes place and focus each student on deeper analysis of the trajectory that informs and underpins their own individual processes and aspiration.

2. Encourage each student toward innovation in the process and presentation of their research through an effective engagement with the prevailing theoretical frameworks that would allow them to build on that scholarship through their practice.

Content Summary

Building from Researching Practice in Term 1 this module builds on the importance of knowledge and understanding of the history and theory of photography, not only in itself, but as it relates to the development of their own practice. At the same time, it is important that students can utilise the methodologies of academic research in order to pursue their own studies.

Throughout this module students will:

1. Be exposed to the PhD students and The European Centre for Documentary Research (eCDR).

2. Understand the historical and contemporary themes that are pertinent to students' own practice.

3. Be exposed to the broad range of material from a diverse area of photographic and artistic environments.

4. Establish a personal approach to writing, research and its broad range of methodologies.
