Module Aims

To provide a work-based learning opportunity for students to understand the practical application of professional ‘face to face’
delivery of youth work in a diverse range of youth work practice situations.

To provide student an opportunity to understand their own engagement skills and role when working with young people on a professional youth work placement. Student will develop a sense of professionalism and learner autonomy with development ‘scaffolded’ by the 3-way partnership between placement, USW and student, along with the Personal Learning Agreement (PLA) in place.

To observe self and apply their learning through reflective writing in a youth work setting with focus on their personal role within anti-discriminative and anti-oppressive practice.

Content Summary

In this module students are expected to use a range of practical tools, methods of delivery and use of informal
educational approaches to working with young people. This work-based learning module is underpinned by the
taught sessions in the module: Youth work in Action - Role of Youth & Community Worker 1. These sessions involve theories around use of experiential learning, reflective practice, professional values and the monitoring and evaluation processes involved in delivery of work with young people.

The opportunity to relate theoretical frameworks to fieldwork experience is central to the training of individuals
seeking a professionally recognised vocational qualification in youth and community work.

To achieve this the student will keep critical recordings to monitor individual learning that evidences ability in relating theory to practice. These reflective recordings will form the greater part of the file of evidence (the Reflective Practice Workbook) required for assessment by placement supervisor.

Students will be required to link these session recordings to the practice learning outcomes as outlined in Youth Work National Occupational Standards (CLDSC, 2019) and Community Development National Occupational Standards (CLDSC, 2015).

Indicative Content:
• Youth Work National Occupational Standards (CLDSC, 2019)
• Community Development National Occupational Standards (CLDSC, 2015)
• Definition of Youth Work and Community Development
• United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
• International, national, local and organisational acts, policies and strategies
• Safeguarding
• Role of supervision and supervisor
• Role and responsibilities of youth work
• Key skills, competencies and attributes of youth work
• Anti-oppressive and anti-discriminatory practice – personal level
• Challenge discrimination and oppression
• Youth work approaches to building meaningful relationships e.g., social pedagogy, Unconditional positive regard, and non-judgmental
