Module Aims
1. To develop skills in appropriate application of informal education methods with young people, employing values, principles and theories relevant to youth and community work, underpinned by the National Occupational Standards for Youth & Community Work, (CLDSC, 2019).
2. To develop reflective practice skills in a youth and community work setting, focusing on anti-oppressive practice and the significance of culture and community, underpinned by the National Occupational Standards for Youth & Community Work, (CLDSC, 2019).
Content Summary
The module content links to the module aims (above) and wider course aims, in meeting the Welsh Government’s requirements for professional endorsement via adherence to the Education and Training Standards Committee Wales guidelines (ETS, 2020), to produce critically reflective students who are innovative, enterprising, digitally literate, commercially aware, and can develop the leadership skills required to deliver effective youth & community work within a multi-agency and inter-professional context. (USW, 2030 Strategy).
Progression through this module is underpinned by a focus on a substantive practice-fieldwork placement (e.g., 300 hours) in a youth and community work context, evidenced via an accumulative assessment in the form of a reflective workbook.
The connections made between taught sessions (SD2S07) evidenced in the reflective workbook, will demonstrate students as ethically robust practitioners in identifying discrimination, oppression and/or exclusion. Tasks and assessments associated with this module will encourage students to be strategic in developing effective social action interventions to address and promote inclusion (ETS/YMCA, Code of Ethics, 2012).
In this module students will continue to question their own professional values and understanding (QAA, 2019) as part of developing as reflective practitioners. They will move their focus to the ‘cultural’ (Thompson, 2019) aspect of their work with young people in communities.
Students will be required to link their learning from taught modules to their reflective recordings, as part of the assessment for this module, and to the practice learning outcomes as outlined in Youth Work National Occupational Standards (CLDSC, 2019)
