Module Aims

This module aims to provide a broad introduction to humanities and social sciences. Using a multidisciplinary approach, students will gain an understanding of the foundations in areas such as history, gender and sexuality, social policy, education, sociology, psychology, the media, law and criminology. Students will be encouraged to explore current issues and relevant topics in the subject area as a way of introducing them to this knowledge and, in doing so the contemporary issues affecting British society and the wider political, cultural and sociological perspectives.

Content Summary

Students will be introduced to the concepts and learning of humanities and social sciences through an exploratory lens of contemporary issues. The approach is practical in nature and will allow the study of the subject to be relevant in context to both the UK and wider European and global perspectives. The topics studied will give students a taste of further themes that can be developed during undergraduate study and also the employment opportunities available beyond the University.

As the module is studied alongside the Research Project module, there will an opportunity for students to deepen their study by focusing on a specialist project of their choice. This may include learning from key areas studied during this module such as social, educational and environmental policy.
