Module Aims

The aim of this module is to build on the core of knowledge and skills developed in the Foundations for the Creative Industries module. The Creative Project module starts by helping learners to decide on an area of art and design that is of interest and that is relevant to their target degree programme. The key areas of study will be contextualised to the learners’ target degree programme.

Content Summary

The module explores how to undertake effective research around students’ area of interest which will involve engagement with a range of sources as well as possibly undertaking additional independent field visits. Learners are guided through the process of setting project aims and objectives and from this to develop a Project Proposal.
Research techniques to help develop ideas further and to create a brief are explored. The importance of recording design thinking and experimentation in order to refine ideas and practical solutions is also explored. This culminates in the production of a detailed Project Proposal. Once the Proposal has been developed and approved, learners will be supported throughout the process of implementing the brief to produce the desired creative output.
This module is delivered using a combination of workshops critiques and tutorials. Seminars are an opportunity for lecturers to introduce learners to the project planning and proposal creation process as well as a chance to demonstrate some of the practical tools to help in the working up of an initial idea into a fully researched and detailed brief. There will be ample opportunity within seminars for discussion of the concepts and content presented and for preliminary discussion of how this might be relevant to the learners’ developing creative ideas for their project. Group discussion and peer review of ideas and concepts will be encouraged during seminars.
During workshops and independent study, learners will undertake a range of primary and secondary research in the early stages of the module. They will learn a variety of methods for developing ideas including, mood boards, material exploration, thumbnails and developmental drawing. This will lead to the creation of a final piece of work. Whilst most of this activity will be individual in nature, the workshop tutors will create opportunities for group discussion of projects, issues and progress to encourage a collective spirit and a sharing of good ideas and practice.
