Module Aims

The aim of the module is to provide students with an opportunity to explore business and management, and in doing so for students to appreciate the extent to which the subject area pervades everyday lives, academia, the workplace and wider society.

Students will be introduced to the concepts and learning of business and management through an exploratory lens of contemporary issues. The approach is practical in nature and will allow the study of the subject to be relevant in both the UK context and from wider European and global perspectives. The topics studied will give students a taste of further themes that can be developed during undergraduate study and also the employment opportunities available beyond the University.

Content Summary

This module introduces learners to the concept and practice of management at different organisational levels and within a variety of contexts. A contrast is also drawn between what is meant by management and leadership. It begins by exploring the role of a manager, what managers do and how this evolves at different levels within an organisation.
The module then goes on to explore the link between management styles and organisational culture allowing the introduction of relevant models and theories. The role of a manager in creating, shaping and motivating teams is explored in more detail and reference is made to relevant theories of motivation. The role of a manager as a decision maker at operational, tactical and strategic levels is also explored further.
The module examines the skills required to become a successful manager and the contribution that both experience and formal training have in their development.
Though use is made of relevant management theory the module takes a very practical approach to management by exploring how managers operate in a variety of different organisational contexts and the challenges they face.
Extensive use will be made of real word scenarios with learners having an opportunity to explore a number of management challenges and from this to make management decisions under realistic conditions. This also offers the chance for learners to explore the extent to which management theories have relevance in a real world context
