Module Aims

To promote interdisciplinary understanding of children’s and young people’s development and needs.

To promote understanding of child and adolescent development and needs.
To foster reflective practice and creative facilitation skills that will enable students to perform well in a range of learning and workplace settings

Content Summary

Child and adolescent development
Study of the developing brain and implications for parenting, education, policy making and health, informing students as they analyse case studies and models of working with children and young people. A focus on youth justice and learning disabilities will support learning to include children’s rights, entitlements and participation theory.

History and Key Principles
The roots of informal education theory will be learnt alongside building an understanding of key principles and theories through exploring the lives and work of influential figures and prominent voices cross culturally.

Reflective practice and creative facilitation skills
Students reflect on work / lived experience developing practice skills and reflecting on effective communication and best practice in seminar groups.

Equality and diversity
A focus on group work will enable students to explore difference and needs, illustrating connections between the theoretical frames of the module and practice.
