Module Aims

To develop knowledge and understanding of the role of the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO)

To develop an understanding of the importance of valuing difference and inclusion

To introduce students to the importance of maintaining professional standards including the safe and lawful handling of personal Information and underpinning of Intelligence principles

To introduce students to the Criminal Justice System and develop an understanding of its functions

Content Summary

In this module, students will cover the key elements associated with carrying out the role of PCSO knowledgeably, ethically, professionally and with due consideration of the Criminal Justice System.

The associated learning will cover the purpose of the role and how it supports the wider policing function, including the stages and requirements of court proceedings. It will consider the principle of ‘policing by consent’ and how this applies in the context of PCSO powers. Through the use of discussion, role play and case studies students will examine their responsibilities and available channels/ processes to challenge bias, prejudice and discrimination, and the importance of maintaining professional standards in both their work and home life.

Through the use of blended learning techniques such as discussion fora, flipped classrooms and recordings, students will also consider the purpose, processes, responsibilities and correct use of information and intelligence. Students will examine the issues that can arise when data management protocols are not adhered to and review the rights of the individual in respect of information held about them.
