Content Summary

In this module students will cover key elements of vulnerability and risk whilst considering victimology and policing responses to the vulnerable within communities.

Through a blended learning approach that includes discussion, case studies, simulation exercise and work-based learning students will understand key concepts of vulnerability and explores key legislation and policies that ensures those at risk of harm or who are vulnerable are treated ethically.

Students will cover vulnerability and its complexities in a wide range of case-based scenarios, including psychological effects, repeat based scenarios and the offender.

Throughout the module the students will cover the definition of ‘vulnerability’ and the national drivers for dealing professionally and ethically with people who ae vulnerable.

Through case studies they will consider the personal aspect of vulnerability and how intrinsic factors can result in harm of risk of harm considering multiple and complex factors that can escalate these risks.

Through case studies and role plays the students will consider the importance of vulnerable people being appropriately supported by the police. They will further consider how a vulnerable person may respond to police presence and through role play will ask students to apply an appropriate initial action when dealing with a person who is or may be vulnerable.

More broadly throughout the module, students will consider, through classroom sessions, discussion and case studies, the definitions, legislation, and guidance associated with vulnerable members of the community.
