Module Aims

To develop knowledge and understanding of problem-solving techniques through effective community engagement and partnership working

To develop knowledge and understanding of the concept of Evidence Based Policing

To develop knowledge of criminology to their professional community policing practice, with particular emphasis upon community support and crime prevention

Content Summary

In this module students will cover principles of problem solving and the concept of Evidence Based Policing (EBP). They will consider the role of the PCSO in partnership working and explore key theories of criminology and sociology in relation to the concept of crime prevention.

Through a unique opportunity for true blended learning, this module begins in the classroom and extends to the workplace as students carry the key concepts and skills they have learned into operational life, where they will work with partners and their communities day to day.

Utilising discussion, group work, guest speakers and interactive learning opportunities, students will consider principles of problem solving, such as problem oriented policing, and crime prevention. They will be introduced to the concept of EBP and through case studies, discussion and group exercises they will study the professional application of an evidence-based approach. Students will consider key aspects of community working, covering differing types and how to work with partners to effectively serve those communities. In doing so they will explore a range of key concepts relating to criminology and examine the relationship between community engagement and crime prevention.

Having utilised a range of learning techniques, students will then transfer this knowledge into the workplace where they will foster effective partnerships and identify a community issue to enable them to engage in effective problem solving. Students will apply an evidence based approach that considers how crime and anti-social behaviour affects community life and explore potential appropriate responses.
