Module Aims

To enable the student to explore the concepts of health promotion, prevention and protection, and to understand the role of the midwife in health promotion from a local, national and global perspective.

Content Summary

This module will explore the midwife’s essential roles in health promotion and public health.
Topics will include health education, epidemiology, social determinants of health and inequalities, perinatal mental health, paternal mental health, an exploration of the relevant public health legislation and the influences of the media on health style and lifestyle choices.
Models of health and behaviour change will be looked at in depth, including Making Every Contact Count. The dissemination of information and identifying and measuring health needs, genomics and demography will be explored considering cultural diversity and inclusivity, and the importance of multidisciplinary working in order to optimise health.
Other topics will include sexual and reproductive health and contraception, optimising mental health and well-being, breastfeeding and the WHO International Code of Marketing of breast milk substitutes. Importance of pre-pregnancy health and well-being counselling.
Determinants of health and wellbeing in the context of midwifery practice locally, nationally, and globally will be explored and the prevention and protection against ill-health in the childbearing individual, fetus and neonate.
