Module Aims

To prepare the student to undertake safe and effective practice-based learning

Content Summary

The content of this module will underpin the student’s development of the knowledge and skills to apply evidence-based best practice in core and domain-specific skills and procedures as per year 1 of the Midwifery Practice Assessment Document.
The module will prepare student midwives to undertake safe and effective practice-based learning. The other modules undertaken in year 1 will interweave and provide a firm foundation for underpinning knowledge to be able to do so.
At the onset students will receive preparation for practice learning, including the need for gaining consent as a student midwife, making the most of all learning opportunities and understanding what supernumerary status means.
The student will explore the relationship they will develop with their practice supervisor/assessor and how this will foster effective clinical learning. Students’ psychological safety forms part of the All Wales Midwifery Practice Assessment Document and students will be made aware of looking after their own wellbeing and that of their colleagues. Students will also be encouraged to consider their own well-being and reflect on the development of resilience.
Students will be prepared for a minimum of 2 continuity of care cases.
Students will be informed of the escalation policy of concerns. Theoretical examples will be provided as a platform for discussion should students witness poor practice.
Students will be required to achieve the skills and proficiencies identified in year one of the Midwifery Practice Assessment Document. These include communication and engagement, documentation, universal skills, medicines management, antenatal care, labour care, postnatal care, newborn care, the promotion of excellence and continual assessment of calculation and administration of medicines.
The module content will address the assessment requirements and provide guidance in relation to formative development using the medication calculations in accordance with the online package Safe Medicate.
Students will be introduced to the concept of continuous reflection to improve their midwifery practice. Models of reflection, responding to feedback to enhance and develop own practice will form part of this module content.
Students will consider the opportunities to work with and learn from members of the interdisciplinary and multiprofessional health and social care teams.
Students are given the opportunity to become an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends champions and Learning Disability Champions to enhance their skills and the skills of others when providing effective midwifery care to all.
The continual development of the student’s literacy, numeracy and technological and digital literacy will be a feature of this module as the student s demonstrate these developing skills within the practice learning environment.
Students will complete the online Bronze IQT service improvement package as part of this module.
