Module Aims

To enable the student to further develop their knowledge, skills, competence, and confidence to deliver safe and effective midwifery care demonstrating the ability to manage deviations in midwifery and neonatal care. When required.

Content Summary

Preparation for practice – the requirements of the All-Wales Midwifery Practice Document (MPAD) for Year 2 to include continuity of care.
To recognise the midwife’s role and participate in inter-professional and multiagency working in practice.
Working effectively with Practice Supervisors and Assessors.
Reflective practice including reflecting on learning that comes from working with interdisciplinary and multiagency teams. Reflect on own thoughts and feelings around positive and negative feedback and take responsibility for incorporating relevant changes into practice and behaviour.
Promoting and maintaining normality.
Recognising in practice pre-existing conditions, development of deviations to the normal and obstetric emergencies in the antenatal, intrapartum, post-natal period. Medicines in emergency situations.
Neonatal care skills in practice: NEWTTS and deviations from the norm. Adapting care to promote infant wellbeing in circumstances such as infection, hypoglycaemia, NAS, birth injury, low birth weight and prematurity.
Development of relevant psychomotor and communication skills.
The safe administration of medicines in the practice area and safe medicate (formative) assessment.
Role and skills of a midwife in stressful and emergency situations. Self-care, coping strategies and sources of support for healthcare workers. Care planning and inter-personal/ multi-disciplinary working skills. Accountability and decision-making in routine, complex, and challenging situations.
Support available to childbearing individuals and their families.
Developing confidence, self-analysis regarding decision making strategies. Understanding, and addressing unconscious bias, personal and external factors influencing decision making.
