Module Aims

To enable students to critically evaluate and lead midwifery practice and services, initiating and managing change to improve services and drive practice forward.

Content Summary

Recognising the risk to public protection and quality of care and escalating concerns in line with local/national escalation guidance and policies.
Understanding and exploring the process of change management and the need to work collaboratively with other agencies and disciplines to provide optimum, evidence based maternity services, utilising current digital and other technologies to enhance care provision.
Exploring and utilising ways of working collaboratively with users of maternity services and stakeholders to develop effective improvement strategies for quality and safety, sharing feedback and learning from positive and adverse outcomes and experiences.
Applying research, audit, and service evaluation findings to inform midwifery practice including consideration of safe staffing levels, effective team working, appropriate skill mix, safety, and quality of care and PDSA cycles.
Locating and accessing best local, national, and international evidence relevant to health, care, policy and midwifery practice including evaluating the importance of research in midwifery, locally, nationally and internationally.
Critical reflection of adverse events, including identifying, reporting, and learning from near misses, critical incidents, major incidents, and serious adverse events.
Leading and managing midwifery care, developing effective compassionate leadership skills and co-ordinating care within the wider interdisciplinary and multiagency teams, arranging a seamless transfer of care when midwifery care is complete.
Development and application of the skills required to support and supervise students and others in the provision of midwifery care, promoting reflection, providing constructive feedback, and evaluating and documenting their performance.
Develop skills in relation to acquisition of strength, resourcefulness and flexibility needed to work in stressful and difficult situations and develop strategies to contribute to safe and effective midwifery practice.
Management of change – models of change – effective compassionate leadership in implementing change.
Application of compassionate leadership and Malcomess Care Aims Framework in practice
