Module Aims

To enable the student to develop the awareness and knowledge to assess, plan and implement holistic, inclusive care to childbearing individuals including meeting their bio-psycho-social and spiritual needs.

Content Summary

Recognising the individuality of physical, psychological, spiritual, social, and cultural needs of childbearing individuals and their families.

Assess, plan, and provide holistic midwifery care to all childbearing individuals including sensitive issues such as, pain management (pharmacological/non-pharmacological) breaking bad news, difficult conversations relating to ethical dilemmas, sexuality, pregnancy, childbirth and the newborn infant. This would include consideration of tools such as SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation).

Exploring and utilising innovative ways of identifying and reaching out to childbearing individuals who may find it difficult to access services, and of adapting care provision to meet their needs.

Advocacy for childbearing individuals when their decision is outside of clinical guidance, minimising risk and maintaining relationships.

Supporting childbearing individuals in different social circumstances including lack of family and community support, surrogacy, poverty, homelessness, those in the criminal justice system, refugees, asylum seekers and victims of trafficking and modern slavery.

Acknowledging the uniqueness of the birth experience within different cultural contexts.

Understanding of the health and social care system of different settings for midwifery and maternity care, and the impact of these on childbearing individuals, newborn infants, partners and families.

Using evidence-based, best practice approaches when working in partnership with childbearing individuals to provide care that optimises normal processes, manages common symptoms and problems, and anticipates and prevents complications.
