Module Aims

To enable the student to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the impact, assessment and management of physical and psychological health conditions and circumstances during the childbirth continuum, working effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team to plan and provide appropriate care in supporting the childbearing individual.

Content Summary

Knowledge, assessment, and management of pre-existing chronic and acute physical health problems during the childbirth continuum including, but not limited to, disorders of the endocrine, renal, cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory systems, haematological conditions and cancer diagnoses.
Knowledge and awareness of additional care needs which may arise as a result of problems with embryological and fetal development, adaptation to extrauterine life or the newborn and how to support childbearing individuals with additional care needs.
Understanding the potential impact of pre-existing and emerging complications and additional care needs on the childbearing individual’s health and wellbeing.
Understanding the impact of psychological circumstances on childbearing individuals and families, including but not limited to alcohol, drug and substance misuse / withdrawal, perinatal loss, stress, depression, anxiety, postpartum psychosis, birth trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, pre-term birth, perinatal mental health.
Supporting childbearing individuals with learning disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder and sensory processing disorders. throughout the childbirth continuum, providing accessible information and effective methods of communication, ensuring partnership working and acting as an advocate to support individual choice.
Working in collaboration with interdisciplinary and multiagency teams to provide respectful, kind, compassionate end of life care for the childbearing individual and/or newborn infant, and their family.
Understanding that the complications and additional care needs of childbearing individuals newborn infants, partners and families may relate to physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual factors.
