Module Aims
• To further interrogate the nature and purpose of Animation as narrative form and to contextualise Animation as a cultural product within wider societal and historical Grand Narratives
• To explore differences and similarities between Classic Narrative, Abstract sequential forms, and Documentary approaches to storytelling and in doing so to broaden the students’ critical thinking and application of theory to practice
Content Summary
This module will consist of embedded theory and practice to give the students contexts within which to work, and will explore a variety of modes that animation can take as a narrative form.
It will cover aspects of Semiotics, Film Language and Visual Storytelling through flipped classroom discussions and practical workshops.
Assessed outcomes will be an essay on an aspect of ‘Reading Film’ and a practical brief of a 2minute audio-visual piece that is either:
• A Reinterpretation of a Folk Tale,
• An Abstract Animation, or;
• A Documentary Animation.
