Module Aims

• Explore global approaches, both political and social, to early childhood care, learning and teaching.
• Critically evaluate different international curricula and reflect on what is considered best practice.

Content Summary

• Global approaches to childhood – concepts of care, learning and teaching.
• Examine the links between policy for sustainability and the links to universal primary education, with specific links to the 2030 Sustainability Goals and the 2015 Millennium Development Goals
• Explore the relationship between early childhood and primary education from a global perspective
• Consider children as a focus of national and global concern and Examine international policy relating to early childhood provision.
• Explore children’s spaces and how they are used to support learning
• Examine some of the different models for learning used internationally and engage with discourse about what constitutes quality education according to cultural context.
• A variety of models for learning will be discussed, including the Scandinavian models, Te Wharike, the Far East and China and Reggio Emilia.
