Module Aims

To explore photographic representation, reality and truth in relation to historical and contemporary photographic contexts.

To apply practical, analytical and self-reflective skills in the development of practical work, particularly through the use of camera techniques.

Content Summary

This introductory module is designed to help students begin their journey as independent practitioners using photography as a means of communication.

Using a range of visual examples from historical and contemporary photographic practice, the module introduces the fundamental question of the photographic medium and its relationship to truth and the real.

Aimed at challenging preconceptions about the way students perceive reality, this module promotes an exploration of photographic representation and meaning.

As a fundamental building block to image making, a strong emphasis will be placed on learning basic technical skills in camera-ship and exposure. This module is intended to instil key practical and critical skills, enabling students to take their first steps towards the development of their own individual visual voice.

As the first module of the course, this module contains a six-week immersive learning element.
