Module Aims

To explore the role of photography as a catalyst for socio-environmental change and sustainability.

To test and articulate ideas, based on research and critical examination.

To generate ideas in response to a brief and develop and refine them through a process of experimental practice and evaluation.

To demonstrate studentship, emerging professionalism and the ability to engage with others.

Content Summary

This final level 4 module offers an opportunity for students to begin to explore their ethical or political position as image-makers within social and environmental contexts. As the world attempts to transition towards more sustainable prospects, and capitalising on renewed political energies from younger generations, the module interrogates the ability of photographers and photography to make positive environmental and societal impact.

Young generations of photographers and artists no longer operate in a hermetic creative bubble - instead they are playing an increasing role within communities (physical and virtual), as visual activists or catalysts for social justice and sustainability. Building on previous learning, this module is a first step to allowing students to identify subject matter driven by an engagement with communities today.

Collaborative in nature, it asks students to engage with others, and to consider carefully how best to do so, within a chosen environmental context. In addition, communication and professional skills are emphasised in preparation for level 05.

As a final project leading up to level 5, this module is an opportunity for students to showcase their emerging visual identity and to give voice to their own particular aesthetic, social or political concerns, using the range of techniques learned so far in the year.
