Module Aims

To develop creative ideas and support these through appropriate research.

To develop critical skills in analysing and interpreting images and in appraising their impact.

To develop an awareness of key topics that connect photography to defining questions of our time, and to use these understandings to inform creative outcomes.

To develop key research skills around a particular subject and to refine these into a clear project proposal.

Content Summary

The module enables students to connect their developing visual practice with relevant critical debates drawn from the defining questions of our time. Building on image analysis skills acquired at level 4, they are encouraged to relate visual practice to relevant contexts in order to inform the generation of creative outcomes.

The module is an opportunity to research, debate and critique photography and visual culture in relation to key questions of our time such as consumerism, spectacle, technology, colonialism, climate change, health and identity. It will also address photography's place and future at a time of rapid technological, social, and political change.

Students will acquire key research and writing skills to enable them to develop their own subject matter to inform visual storytelling, regardless of the photographic genres they operate in.
