Module Aims
Organisational Behaviour (OB) is an interdisciplinary field of study which explores individual, group and organisational behaviour and the impact of individuals, groups, organisations and society in creating, shaping and controlling behaviours.
In this module, you will learn and understand OB from a managerial and critical viewpoint, drawing on international research and case studies. The managerial viewpoint seeks to understand behaviour in order to manage more effectively and, hopefully, more ethically - understanding the fundamentals of behaviour in organisations enables better practices to be developed and implemented.
The critical viewpoint seeks to view the organisation from the perspective of employees and asks questions about the impact of managerial practice and their experience of work more broadly – including the role that their peers may play in shaping their experience of work. In addition to the individual, psychological focus that the OB field often takes this module will address organisational misbehaviour and forms of subversion that manifest in traditional and contemporary settings
The focus of the module is primarily on the behaviour of individuals, with an emphasis on the applied nature of organisational behaviour, the realities of work and the interconnection between society and organisational behaviour and its integration with HRM.
This module builds on HR1SX1 People, Work and Society and draws on students’ experiences of organisations and institutions. It challenges the student to embrace ambiguity and ambivalence: there are no well-defined answers to understanding and managing behaviour/misbehaviour, which is what makes behaviour such an interesting and challenging field of study and should help you as a future HR professional.
This Module is mapped to the CIPD Core Knowledge (People Practice KO1; Culture and Behaviour KO2; Change KO6) and Behaviours (Ethical Practice BO1; Valuing People BO3; Working Inclusively BO4)
