Module Aims
- to disrupt the everyday deficit discourse about learners’ communication and ‘study skills’ and challenge judgemental attitudes towards language and literacies
- to recognise the wide variety of formal and informal literacy practices that we engage in across the domains of life: work, leisure, education, home etc.
- to foster curiosity and respect for the ‘non-school’ literacy practices that learners are familiar with (and may be expert in)
- to find opportunities to use learners’ home/outside literacy practices to support learning in college
Content Summary
- Reflecting on own literacy, numeracy and/or digital literacy practices in everyday contexts (outside of formal learning and teaching contexts)
- Developing creative activities for eliciting and discussing ‘out of college’ literacy practices?with learners
- Evaluating the language, literacy, numeracy and/or digital literacy demands of a unit or course
- Recognising and valuing the language, literacy, numeracy and/or digital literacy strengths and areas for development of learners
- Developing learning support events that meet the needs, strengths and interests of an individual learner.
