Module Aims

The module will provide a basis for study to students to:

1. engage in a legal services environment and be able to provide evidence of the experience.
2. enhance their ability to appraise their performance so as to be prepared for graduate employment opportunities

Content Summary

This module will involve students engaging with the University of South Wales Legal Advice Clinic [LAC]. It continues to build upon the clinical legal skills embedded at level 4 and prepares students for the core Clinical Practice 2 module that will be studied at level 6.

Every student will:
• undertake a placement at the LAC for 4 hours per week for 20 weeks
• engage in a full induction programme covering topics such as GDPR, confidentiality, file management, an introduction to IT systems, professional conduct and operational day to day issues
· be introduced to key legal practice skills including research, writing, drafting, interviewing and advising. Students will run simulated client cases using the LAC’s case management system, enabling them to develop these legal practice skills using authentic problem-based scenarios
· be given an opportunity to shadow real client interviews
· learn about clinical legal education, access to justice, dealing with vulnerable clients and the ethics of advice giving

Asynchronous Assessment Portfolio 1 Students will be required to compile a portfolio that will include work based on a simulated client scenario which assesses various legal skills.
