Module Aims

This module will introduce students to the theories of public legal education and access to justice, and the delivery of public legal education.

1. To provide students with the opportunity to research and learn substantive areas of law to a standard where they can deliver a workshop to a local community group based on an appropriate research project.

2. To equip students to reflect upon their continuing personal, academic and professional development, through collaborative and experiential learning opportunities.

3. To develop graduate attributes of teamwork, collaboration, reflection, organisation, time management, teaching and communication.

Content Summary

This module continues to build upon academic and professional skills embedded at level 4 and will cover the following indicative content:

• What Public Legal Education is.
• Key concepts in public legal education, pro bono work, street law and clinical legal education.
• Access to justice, the role of pro bono and public legal education in the legal sector, legal research, reflection and feedback, and principles of effective communication, teaching and engaging audiences.
• Role of law in education and benefit of outreach programmes.
The module will require student participation in the following ways:

• Students will work in groups to develop a research project to present to a local school, charity, community group or organisation, which is designed to educate members of the public on a particular area of law.

• Working on clinical legal education projects through the University of South Wales Legal Advice Clinic [LAC]. This will include interacting with members of the public (possibly including school-aged pupils).

• Students must abide by the rules and procedures of the LAC. Any breach of these rules may result in the student being removed from practical work with the community which may mean that they are not able to complete part of the assessment.

• Students may need to undertake Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and have satisfactory clearance to enable them to work with some community groups.
