Module Aims

This module will provide students with an understanding of law as it affects people in the community.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to:

1. Evidence their further engagement in a legal services environment through participation in community-based projects
2. Enhance their ability to critically appraise and reflect upon their performance so as to be prepared for graduate employment opportunities

Content Summary

This module continues to build upon the clinical legal skills embedded at level 4 and level 5 (Clinical Practice 1 module) and complements the level 6 module (Clinical Practice 2) enabling students to further develop the skills required for legal practice by focusing on community-based project work.

Students will:
• undertake a placement at the Legal Advice Clinic (LAC) for 4 hours per week for 20 weeks focusing on participating and engaging in community-based projects

• obtain an understanding of law as it affects people in the community

• have the opportunity to develop their legal practice skills by providing advice and assistance to clients in a community setting as part of the LAC outreach and projects programme

• keep a diary during their placement to evidence and support their learning. This will also form a record of any Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) undertaken, which will be required should a student wish to subsequently claim QWE gained during the placement
