Module Aims

The module will provide students with an opportunity to build on knowledge of the substantive rules of Criminal Law.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;
1. Develop a detailed understanding of advanced and complex aspects of the criminal law
2. Critically analyse, evaluate and apply the rules relating to criminal law and the socio-legal context.

Content Summary

The module will cover the following indicative content:
• Crime, Punishment and Human Rights
• Socio-legal aspects of the Criminal Law
• Crimes without borders; the transnational nature of criminal law including: human trafficking and slavery, corporate wrongdoing financial crime and drug trafficking
• Domestic law
• The principle of capacity ( age of criminal responsibility)
• Consent to harm and bodily integrity
• Homicide ( murder, manslaughter)
• End of life decisions( assisted suicide)
• Defences ( complete, self -defence, insanity, automatism) and (partial, loss of self- control, diminished responsibility)
• Sexual Offences (rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault)
