Module Aims

The module will provide students with an introduction to the rules on family law.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;
1. Develop a clear understanding of the law relating to the family;
2. Develop a clear understanding of the social and political context within which law relating to the family operates;
3. Analyse and apply the law relating to the family.

Content Summary

The module will cover the following indicative content:

· The formation of adult relationships: marriage, civil partnerships and cohabitation
· Nullity
· Forced marriage
· Domestic abuse
· Divorce and judicial separation
· Financial provision on divorce and separation
· Family property
· Child support
· Parenthood and parental responsibility
· Private law relating to children – The Children Act 1989
