Module Aims
The module will provide students with an introduction to legal issues in sport.
The module will provide a basis for study for students to:
• Demonstrate detailed understanding of the relationship between sport and the law.
• Critically analyse the different types of legal liability which arise in sport and various legal issues and case studies.
• Evaluate the structure and organisation in domestic, European and international sports.
Content Summary
The module provides a wide-ranging examination of the legal issues relating to sport regulation including the following indicative content:
• Principles of regulation, self-regulation and dispute resolution in sport.
• Criminal liability which can arise in sport.
• Civil liability which can arise in sport.
• Drug abuse of sporting participants.
• The safety of stadia and the spectators.
• Discrimination in sport.
• Competition policy.
• Corruption in sport including betting regulations and the problem of match fixing.
• Broadcasting rights, marketing and sponsorship of sporting events.
• Intellectual property rights in sport.
