Module Aims

To enable the student to further develop their knowledge, skills, proficiency and confidence in safe and effective Occupational Therapy practice.

Content Summary

This module will build on the Practice Module for Level 4 and continue to develop the students’ knowledge, understanding and application of IPE.

Content will address:

Preparation for practice – the requirements of Part 2 of the Practice Assessment Document and associated processes will be discussed in detail with the students as part of this module. This will include working effectively with Practice Educators to develop learning contracts and plans for own practice development.

Professional reasoning models, models of practice, transitions of care, Care Aims Framework, compassionate leadership to inform person-centred, evidence-based, occupation focused, occupational therapy intervention. Outcome measures that measure occupational change.

Utilising feedback from people who access services, practice educators, and Personal Tutors to inform practice and take responsibility for identifying future learning needs and relevant change.

Developing confidence and self-analysis regarding decision making strategies. Being assertive and developing professional courage. Sharing and justifying own viewpoint succinctly and appropriately in a range of situations. Educating others through role modelling and supervision.

Understanding, and addressing unconscious bias, personal and external factors influencing decision making.

Accountability and decision-making. Decision-making principles. Selecting the evidence base to inform decision-making processes. Processes of diagnostic reasoning. Ethical approaches to decision-making. Mental capacity and capability in decision-making. Managing complexity.

Working effectively with peers and the multi-professional team, mechanisms for evaluation of team decision making processes. Shared ownership of decision making.

Reflective practice, including reflecting on learning that comes from working with interdisciplinary and multi-agency teams.

Developing multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team working and interprofessional communication skills. Communicating effectively and concisely in a range of situations.

Building on the principles of the Bronze Improving quality together – reflecting on practice – seeking opportunities to enhance / improve aspects of practice.

Further development of professional identity.

Understanding and development of the RCOT Four Pillars of Career Development (Professional Practice, Facilitation of Learning, Leadership, Evidence, Research and Development).
