Module Aims

The module will provide students with a foundational knowledge of principal issues in contemporary medical law and ethics.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of medical ethics and key issues within medical law.
2. Analyse and critically evaluate a range of contentious legal and ethical dilemmas and developments in common law jurisdictions.
3. Apply medical law rules to complex scenarios.

Content Summary

The content draws on the ethical and legal framework that arise from the practice and development of medical science.
The module will cover the following indicative content:
· Foundational elements of the ethical framework
· Ethical and legal sources governing autonomy and consent
· Confidentiality
· Resource allocation
· Clinical Negligence
· Mental Health
· Reproduction, birth and parenthood
· End of life issues such as death, euthanasia, organ donation and transplants
