Module Aims

The module will introduce students to the rules of the substantive area of the law of torts, the cornerstone of private and public tortious liability. It is the foundation for many of the other subjects studied throughout the course.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;

1. Develop an understanding of the legal rules of the law of torts.
2. Develop an understanding of the transactional approach of the law of torts in terms of liability, obligations and remedies.
3. Develop knowledge and understanding of the issues that arise in determining liability in torts.
4. Develop knowledge and understanding of the common law and equitable doctrines which underpin the law of tort.
5. Develop analytical, application, problem solving skills and transactional skills.

Content Summary

The module will introduce students to the common law and statutory rules of Tort by typically covering the following indicative content:

• Legal rules concerning the major areas within tortious obligations including negligence, occupier’s liability, vicarious liability and defences.
• Appropriate remedies both common law and equity based.
